Jo Galvin-Martinengo discusses her practice with photographer and art director Laura Taylor.

It's all about play. I’m a bit of a Magpie. I like to discover my materials and spend time exploring their personalities and quirks. We get to know each other and work it out from there. I try to learn all I can about new materials and techniques then find out how far they can be pushed. It’s fun to discover what they like and don’t like, who they play well with and who needs to be kept apart. Once I start this process, I can get pretty obsessive, and this is what generates the artwork. My approach to making is intuitive. I do small batch releases and one-offs. Some pieces are made in minutes, others change and evolve over several years. The collections are an expression of current obsession. Whatever is rolling around in my head - a conversation on replay, a song, a myth, exploring science - biology and chemistry are favourites. I draw connections between subjects and events which pose themselves as internal questions - where is the line between the real and the imagined?
